Surgery

As the state's only Level 1 trauma center, University of Mississippi Health Care provides critical areas of surgery at University Hospital. The comprehensive teams of specially trained physicians, nurses and technicians are dedicated to making patients as comfortable as possible while treating their medical conditions with the latest surgical techniques and protocols.

Specialties represented within the surgical department include cardiothoracic surgery, general surgery, pediatric surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, trauma and critical care, transplant, vascular and endovascular surgery and urology surgery.

Surgery, whether elective or required, is done for a multitude of reasons. A patient may have surgery to:

  • Further explore the condition for the purpose of diagnosis.
  • Take a biopsy of a suspicious lump.
  • Remove diseased tissues or organs.
  • Remove an obstruction.
  • Reposition structures to their normal position.
  • Redirect channels.
  • Transplant tissue or whole organs.
  • Implant mechanical or electronic devices.
  • Improve physical appearance.
    •

What is surgery?

Many people face surgery every year. Some operations are elective procedures, while others are required procedures. In some cases, surgery is an emergency response to an urgent medical condition.Surgery, as defined by the American Medical Association, is the treatment of disease, injury or other disorders by direct physical intervention, usually with instruments. >>> more

Robotic assistance

Robotic-assisted surgery for minimally invasive procedures is among the advancements offered by our skilled surgeons. Enhanced three-dimensional high-definition resolution gives surgeons a clear, crisp – and highly magnified view – of the surgical area. UMHC uses the latest da Vinci surgical system technology for urologic and gynecologic procedures, kidney removal, tumor removal, lymph node dissections and ureteral blockages. Patients benefit from shorter hospital stays, quicker recovery times, less blood loss and fewer incisions for minimal scarring.

UMHC short stay unit

Another recent addition is the short stay unit at University Hospital. It provides patients with a single location for check-in, transition to surgery and recovery after surgery. The unit has 16 rooms for ambulatory services and 14 for 23-hour observation. Bedside monitoring is available for patients needing closer observation, such as a catheterization lab patient with a four- to six-hour observation stay.
