Speech and Swallowing Disorders

Program Description

Dysphagia refers to all problems related to swallowing. Swallowing is a very complex process involving a number of muscles working in a carefully controlled, coordinated fashion. Swallowing problems can be caused by strokes and cancer, and can lead to weight loss, malnutrition and pneumonia. Effectively treating dysphagia requires a comprehensive evaluation and treatment approach. Our goal is to significantly improve the quality of life for dysphagic patients by restoring them to the safest, least restrictive diet possible, ideally, back to their baseline level of swallow function.

Services

  • Comprehensive evaluations including modified barium swallowing studies and FEES (fiberoptic endoscopic examination of swallow).
  • Recently added to treatment options is neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) to the oral/pharyngeal muscles, which has shown remarkable results for certain patients.

Clinical Team

Our team includes a physician specialist and three speech-language pathologists, with special training in treating and managing swallowing disorders in both adults and children. The team works closely together to provide a comprehensive evaluation and individualized treatment plan for each patient.
