What are visiting hours?
Normal visiting hours at University Hospital are 9 a.m.-9 p.m. seven days a week. Some areas may have limited visiting hours. Please check with the nurse on the patient’s floor for specific visiting hours. Also, check with a floor nurse before bringing flowers or gifts to a patient. There may be restrictions on certain units or floors.
Parents are allowed to stay 24 hours a day at Batson Children’s Hospital. Visiting hours for the pediatric intensive care unit are noon-7 p.m.; visitors under age 12 will be screened by the nursing staff as a health precaution for patients. Visitors to the neonatal intensive care unit are limited to parents, grandparents and great-grandparents; no siblings or children are allowed.
Critical care units have specific visiting hours – 5-6 a.m., noon-1 p.m., 5-6 p.m. and 9-10 p.m. Visitors must be 14 or older, and only two visitors are allowed at the bedside.
Visitation hours for the bone marrow transplant unit are open per patient request. One family member is permitted to stay overnight.
Where can I get more information and/or assistance?
The main information desk in the University Hospital lobby is manned from 6 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday and 7 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The staff can answer questions as well as help arrange concierge services, including home, business, transportation, entertainment and personal needs. Notary services also are available.
Is there free parking?
Free parking is available at the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium on North State Street across from the main hospital. When that lot is full, parking can be found next to the Medical Towers building on South Stadium Circle as well as the Old Farmers Market lot.
Free shuttles run to and from the UMHC hospitals and clinics from 5:30 a.m.-midnight Monday-Friday. Shuttles to the Jackson Medical Mall operate from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday. Service is not available on weekends or UMHC holidays. The 33-passenger blue buses are not equipped for disability equipment, such as wheelchairs. Two 14-passenger white buses with wheelchair lifts are available during regular shuttles. For more about handicapped transportation, call (601) 984-1513.
Free valet parking is provided for day surgery and Heart Station patients. Attendants are stationed at the main entrance of University Hospital; hours are 5 a.m.-5:30 p.m.
Free parking also is available for patients at University Physicians Pavilion, Jackson Medical Mall and other clinics located off the UMMC campus.
Is paid parking available?
Paid parking is available at garages A and B and lots C and D on the UMMC campus. Garage A offers easy access to University Hospital, and Garage B is convenient to Conerly Critical Care Hospital, Wiser Hospital for Women & Infants and Batson Children's Hospital. Lot C is near Batson Hospital, while lot D is situated on the north side of the campus.
Cost is 50 cents an hour with a maximum daily rate of $5. Valet parking is available at University Hospital for $7. Hours for valet service are 5 a.m.-5:30 p.m.; vehicles are parked in Garage B.
Discounted parking permits for patients (one vehicle per patient) can be purchased from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday at the UMHC business office, located on the first floor of the main hospital, and on weekends or nights at obstetrics receiving on the basement level of Wiser Hospital for Women & Infants. Cost is $3 for three days, $7 a week and $30 per month.
Is smoking allowed?
Smoking and the use of tobacco products are not allowed anywhere in UMHC facilities or on the University of Mississippi Medical Center campus.
Is security provided on the UMMC campus?
UMHC is committed to providing safe and secure facilities for patients and visitors. Police protection is available 24 hours a day, and emergency stations are located at various locations across the campus.
Hospital doors are closed from 9 p.m.-6 a.m., and a visitor’s pass (obtained from the patient’s nursing staff) and photo ID are required for re-admittance.
Are interpreter services available?
UMHC either employs or has access through a “language line”phone service to interpreters for most languages spoken throughout the world. Special arrangements can be made for use of a TTD, materials in Braille or help for the hearing-impaired.
Do you have a gift shop?
Gift shops can be found in University Hospital and the Wiser Hospital for Women & Infants. Visitors will find a wide variety of gifts, including flowers, cards, gifts, magazines, toys and calling cards, at the University Hospital gift shop on the first floor of University Hospital. The gift shop is open each day from 6:30 a.m.-10 p.m.; call (601) 984-1299. It offers complimentary gift and flower delivery to hospital rooms.
The Wiser Hospital shop offers merchandise specially selected for new parents and their infants, including stuffed animals, toys, layette items and door hangers that can be personalized with the baby’s name. The shop is open from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. p.m. Monday-Friday and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdays; call (601) 815-5906. Complimentary gift and flower delivery to Wiser Hospital rooms is available.
Each shop offers custom gift baskets can be made to order. Flowers and gifts are delivered to patient rooms at no charge. Orders can be placed by phone, and all major credit cards are accepted.
A retail store and student bookstore with gifts, office needs, UMHC specialty items and snacks is housed within the Norman C. Nelson Student Union. Hours are 7:45 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. What are my dining options?
There are several food venues located at different locations throughout the UMMC campus. Menus, including daily specials, are posted outside the cafeterias each day.
The main cafeteria is located on the first floor of University Hospital near the central elevators. Three buffet meals are served each day – breakfast, 6-9:30 a.m.; lunch, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.; and dinner, 4:30-5:30 p.m. Grilled selections are made to order 24 hours a day, and a “grab and go” area with ready-made salads, sandwiches, fresh fruits and desserts is always open.
A soup and salad cafe, including made-to-order salad combinations, is located across the hall from the main cafeteria. Hours are 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.
Breakfast, lunch and snacks are available at the Wiser Hospital for Women & Infants and the Nelson Student Union food court. Hours are 7 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday-Friday. Both offer made-to-order grilled selections, pizza and “grab and go” choices. The Wiser bistro also has a fresh subway/panini station and a soup/salad bar, while the Student Union court has a sandwich and fresh salad bar.
A Subway sandwich shop is located down the hall from the main cafeteria; hours are 7 a.m.-2 a.m. Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-11 p.m. Saturdays and 9 a.m.-11 p.m. Sundays. Kiosks with gourmet coffees, sodas and snacks can be found at the University Physicians Pavilion and on the first floor of University Hospital.
A cafeteria at Methodist Rehabilitation Center is open for lunch Monday-Sunday. Hours are 11 a.m.-2 p.m. A McDonald’s also is located at MRC; hours are 6 a.m.-11 p.m.
A variety of local restaurants can be found in close proximity to UMHC medical facilities.
Where can I find area lodging?
A variety of hotels, motels, inns and other lodging options are available in the metro Jackson area. The Circles® Concierge service at UMHC also maintains a list of places to stay and their general price range. Some hotels in the area offer discounts to UMHC and Batson Children's Hospital patients and their families. Please be sure and ask about any special offers when you make reservations.
How can I contact a patient?
Information desks can connect callers to the patient’s room or provide room information. They can also provide telephone numbers for special waiting rooms.

How can I send a card to a patient?
UMHC has a post office located on campus, providing daily mail delivery to patients. Patients, guests and employees can send outgoing mail, too. Hours are 10 a.m.-4:15 p.m. Monday-Friday with postal pick-up at 3:30 p.m.
Are ATMs available?
There are several ATM machines located in UMHC facilities, and Mississippi Federal Credit Union has a branch (with drive-through) on campus. ATM affiliations include Trustmark, Regions, BancorpSouth and Mississippi Federal Credit Union. Moneygrams and Western Union can be purchased within close proximity to the campus.
Can I use my cell phone inside the hospital? Are phones in the rooms?
Cell phones may be used, except where specifically prohibited. Patient rooms have phones (local calls are free), and public telephones are available in various locations and hospitals.
